To be completely still, body and mind.
With the average person’s thoughts at a rate of 60,000 per day, this very thought is ironically quite hard to think about.
All thoughts aside, I sought to experience this zenlike state of nothingness for myself. So I signed up for a Zazenkai, an all-day intensive mediation at the Zen Center in Tempe, AZ.
The following is a recount of my experience:
This morning I rose at 4:40am. Yes, 4:40am and it’s a Saturday.
I had gone to sleep “early” at 10:30pm so I could wake up at this unearthly hour and appear at least part human and not all zombie. Fighting the temptation to stay beneath the warm covers and enjoy the deep dark night, I threw on a coat, my contacts and I headed out the door.
